Oculus Rift

What is the oculus rift development kit 2 or dk 2 as common known

The Oculus Rift is a new virtual reality headset that lets players step inside their favorite games and virtual worlds.

Currently the Oculus Rift is only available to developers intended to develop VR software. Although anyone can order from their site (Order DK 2 here) for $300 although expect to wait at least 4 months for yours.

The consumer version is not expected until sometime in 2015 but that should not stop you. This site will explain how to get yours up and running to fully geek out on VR!

What can I really do with it?
VR is mostly limited to demos, beta version of games such as Elite Dangerous and some older games that have been converted to support Oculus such as Half-Life 2. (https://share.oculusvr.com/app/half-life-2)
There are however drivers available such as VIREio Perception Driver and VORPx (http://www.vorpx.com)  that let you play most games on Oculus.
I tried BF4 with VORPx. Works pretty well except wherever you look is where you aim!
It is playable (barely) while running/walking but try flying. EJECT!
Prepared to be owned if you play BF4 with Oculus!
It was enough to lightly drool over the prospect of BF5 in VR. Although since BF4 does not even support TrackIR my hopes may be dashed :-(

If you're a geek (which I am a self confessed one) this is more than enough to pick up a DK2 to tinker and play with until the consumer version comes out. When will that be? My best guess is next year in 2015.

What's in the DK2 box?
•Headset with detachable cable
•Lenses: (A) set, and (B) set.
•Positional Tracker / "Camera"
•Positional Tracker USB cable
•Positional Tracker Sync cable
•DVI to HDMI adapter
•Power Adapter: US, UK, AU and EU

Technical Details

Low Latency 360 Degree head tracking

The Rift uses custom tracking technology to provide ultra-low latency 360° head tracking, allowing you to seamlessly look around the virtual world just as you would in real life. Every subtle movement of your head is tracked in real time creating a natural and intuitive experience.

Stereoscopic 3D View

The Oculus Rift creates a stereoscopic 3D view with excellent depth, scale, and parallax. Unlike 3D on a television or in a movie, this is achieved by presenting unique and parallel images for each eye. This is the same way your eyes perceive images in the real world, creating a much more natural and comfortable experience.

Wearable & Affordable

The Oculus Rift delivers a high-end virtual reality experience at an affordable price. The Rift is also designed to be as comfortable and lightweight as possible for long play sessions.

Ultra Wide Field of View

The Oculus Rift provides an approximately 100° field of view, stretching the virtual world beyond your peripheral vision. Your view of the game is no longer boxed in on a screen and is only limited by what your eyes can see. The combination of the wide field of view with head-tracking and stereoscopic 3D creates an immersive virtual reality experience.
