How To Set Up Oculus Rift For Project CARS

How To Set Up Oculus Rift For Project Cars

Racing Fans. With the latest Update To Project Cars The following steps are no longer needed. Please see latest Project Cars Setup Instructions.

After several delays for Project CARS, the latest of which was on February 18, 2015 when it was announced that Project CARS would be delayed until May 12, 2015. Project CARS is finally here and brings with it the awesome weather systems we were all looking forward to. Racing in the rain is just so much better with native Oculus Rift support.
However as with many Oculus Rift games the support is very much like that for Assetto Corsa where the menus are NOT in VR.
Which leaves you one of two options:
One - Try to figure out where the menus are in the Oculus Rift by closing one eye or
Two - use a tool like Open Broadcaster (OBS) to duplicate the Rift image onto your main monitor.
We're going to cover the latter which is a far better experience.

If you have not yet set up OBS then please review our article on Setting up and Installing OBS

  1. Download and Set up OBS (Ensure you have at least one Scene Source Added)
  2. Set up your Oculus Rift in Extended Mode (Primary mode is not supported)

  3. Launch Project Cars
  4. Alt-tab back to OBS and double click your Scene selection to ensure [pCars64]: Project Cars is selected
  5. Click on Preview Stream
You should now see your project cars displayed in the OBS window

  6. ALT-TAB back to the Project Cars. Your cursor Left/Right keys should now be working.
  7. You do not need to modify any graphic settings for the Rift. The resolution and 75 fps will automatically be set.
You may need to tweak the settings to make sure you maintain AT LEAST 75 fps.
Pressing CTRL-S will show your FPS in-game.
  8. Select your car, course etc and when you launch the game you will be in VR racing heaven, albeit pixelated DK2 heaven
  9. Optional: There is no default key to center the rift. However you can bind a key or button on your controller to do so.
Go to Options > Controls > Edit Assignment > Bind a key/button to Center VR Headset.
