Dirt 3 has been around since 2011. The Vireio driver brings Dirt 3 to life for the Oculus Rift. However, the game is looking a little dated these days.

Codemasters is currently working on a new version of Dirt called Dirt Rally and are integrating Oculus Rift support early on in the development process. Dirt Rally is currently available from Steam as an “Early Access Game” which means it is not yet finished and likely contains many bugs. Early access seems to be the “in thing” these days.

How does Dirt Rally play so far? 

Generally, it is playable although obviously is early access. Menus are not yet completed and easily readable. I suggest in Oculus Direct mode so the menus are mirrored on your monitor or running OBS.

If you want a seamless VR experience and looking NOT to spend $32 on a half finished VR game. I suggest you wait until the final version is released. Another point to note is the lack of 3D; this is only 2D at this time.

Dirt Rally Oculus Rift Setup:

  1. First, run the game once and close it
  2. Open the following file:
    C:\Users\[user]\Documents\My Games\DiRT Rally\hardwaresettings\hardware_settings_config.xml
  3. Set the resolution line to:
    <resolution width=”1920″ height=”1080″ aspect=”auto” fullscreen=”true” vsync=”0″ multisampling=”4xmsaa”>
  4. There are also some Oculus-specific settings you can play within this file if you want to experiment:
    <oculus enabled=”true” headMovement=”true” chromatic=”true” timeWarp=”true” vignette=”true” overdrive=“true” convergence=“1.0” verticalOrientation=”0.66″ />
    headMovement: allows our usual head-bobbing logic to run (you may want to disable this)
    chromatic: chromatic aberration override
    timeWarp: low latency override
    vignette: edge darkening override
    overdrive: low latency override
    convergence: modify the IPD (also available in the game, see below)
    verticalOrientation: a value from 0.0 to 1.0, which forces the camera to retain a vertical orientation, which helps to reduce nausea and provide a more believable experience
  5. It is recommend turning off the OSD via the gameplay menu. Otherwise, this causes it to interfere with what you see in the world. Very much like trying to drive your car with a huge crack in the windshield.

This is not IPD settings, just head position on neck. This game in moment only 2D in Oculus :/

Debating buying this and skeptical about early access. 
So the IPD essentially just zooms it in and out? 

I went and bought this last night, and I'm a little disappointed.  In SLI, the screen flickers, so that has to be turned off.  There is a "Stereo" setting under the "Graphics" header in that config file that defaults to "False"  I changed mine to True, and I feel that it's in 3D, but the Rift can make you think it's in 3D when you are looking at 2D stuff.  In the same "Stereo" setting there is a "Separation" and "Convergence" entry.  Those numbers can be adjusted, and when I have more time, I'll play with that.  Right now it's just juddery and ghosting, and I know for a fact its not running at the 75Hz frequency that we need for low latency.

This game is still not a fully fledged game and you're going to have problems. The game is pre-release and to make matters worse pre-release Oculus support. The game is really just 2D at this time. 
What video card are you running?

I know it's an early release, but I was just under the impression that it was a solid running game with the Oculus Rift because of some other articles I had read.  I see that this page does have the disclaimer to wait, but the other pages didn't really say any negatives about it...Just that it had Rift support, and played great. When I disable SLI,  I'm only running a single GTX 670 ...which doesn't even meet the recommended requirements.  I don't think it's totally 2D, but the stereoscopy is really mild.  I like Codemasters race games, so I don't totally regret buying it, but it's not the race game I wanted to jump into after buying a G27 last week.

G27 does make VR racing more fun though! 
My recommendations for racing in VR right now are: 

iRacing (with pricing caveats) 

Assetto Corsa (Menu option issues but workable)
