UAVs are cool, fun and get you outdoors.
Oculus Rift is fun and takes you places you can never visit yourself.
Combine the two? You have the making of an awesome experience which makes me glad I live in the 21st century and not the 18th century (boring)
People are often thinking up new and innovative ways to use their VR headset. Whilst searching YouTube for the latest cat video I came across Intuitive Aerial, a Swedish company specializing in airborne camera rigs. They modified one of their Black Armored Drones with a makeshift wooden rig, carrying a laptop and two cameras arranged side-by-side. This is not your average $99 UAV, this thing has enough power to lift the hardware. The laptop streams the video signal wirelessly to another laptop on the ground via Wi-Fi which is connected to the Oculus Rift.
The current system uses built-in wlan-cards in the laptops. Intuitive Aerial plan to increase the range by using outdoor Access Points (APs). Range for APs such as the Ubiquiti-systems are quoted as several km - using legal frequencies and power levels.
Check out the video below. No cats were harmed in the making of this video.
