Users of the Oculus Rift are accustomed to placing their motion tracking camera in front of them. In my case the tracker is placed on a tripod on the desk. The developers of Shadows of Isolation have turned this around by placing the DK 2 tracker above you hanging from the ceiling to track your body movement. Placing the tracking camera above you allows the developers to follow your body movement in the virtual world and do away with the traditional controller. So after some nails in the ceiling and some extension cables I was off and running. Some word of warning to those who are susceptible to VR nausea. For this to work well you need to use your whole body when moving and sit on a simple stool and not a regular high back office chair.
Shadows of Isolation can be experienced via game controllers, keyboard, and/or positional tracking. The most robust control scheme is a new positional tracking system we designed specifically for this experience. It utilizes the users’ bodies as controllers for navigating the virtual world, simply leaning in the direction they want to move and rotating their body to face any direction. This control method vastly reduces VR sickness and increases the sense of persistence. Anyone can utilize this control system by altering the DK2 setup by mounting the positional tracking camera directly above head.
Of course you don’t need to place the tracker on the ceiling to experience this demo. You can still use the regular controller or keyboard to control your movement..
