The $250k Camera Rig Being Used to Shoot 360-Degree Oculus Porn

Producing quality 360-degree video for Oculus Rift-like headsets is still really difficult to do. Often you can see the seams between where one camera ends and the other starts. Other times the scale is off.
For some videos, this may not be so bad. For porn however you don't want a join line in the middle of the action or look like you're having "relations" with a giant.

Which is why high-tech porn company Huccio developed the $250,000 seven camera rig custom-designed for its venture into the world of immersive adult video.

Huccio were the pioneers who first brought us 4K porn a few years back. In a few weeks the company is launching a new premium subscription service consisting of 360 degree, 2K, and 4K adult content. The cost of this innovation? between $20-40 per month depending on whether you pay up front or not. Although not the first, OculusRiftPorn is another. This version strives to be the best quality.

So onto what makes up this $250,000 camera.  It consists of seven EPIC Red Dragon [Brain Only] cameras outfitted with Sigma 8mm fisheye lenses that provide a super wide-angle field of view.

Red Dragons are from cheap: The camera body alone costs at least $24,000, and to accessorize it with monitors and lenses costs well over $30,000.
The rig was designed by a freelance engineer who wished to remain anonymous, but in a lot of ways it resembles camera rigs that have been developed by the likes of 360 video startups like Jaunt VR. When it arrived about two weeks ago, Huccio immediately hired five actresses to perform what the company claim is the first 360-degree orgy.

Recording the footage is immensely challenging. Since the rig records in 360 degrees, only performers can be in the room while a scene is being filmed. You cannot have camera guys, sound boom guys or anyone else. It requires a whole new filming technique. This also presents a unique lighting challenge because, again, the entire room is on camera. Huccio solved the lighting problem by basically illuminating the shots with ambient lights placed directly on the grid holding the cameras. The cinematographer also hid the lights behind couches for a little extra light.

The Red Dragon shoots at an amazing 6K of resolution. Yes, that is 6K. Not only is the resolution insanely high but can shoot at 60 frames per second.
So this means you're not inserting your run of the mill SD card in there. Each camera records 260GB per half hour, which means the whole rig requires 1.8TB every 30 minutes.
