How To Watch Movies On The Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 DK2

Full article

You've messed with some demos, played some games maybe even tried some VR porn? (I won't tell)
How about a good movie?

You can indeed watch any movie on the DK2 in pretty much any format you wish (.MKV, .MP4, .AVI etc), including 3D movies.

How? Here we go:

  1. Download and install VLC Player
  2. Download and install VR Player
  3. You then need to download the DK2 Tracker (Hosted here incase it is removed from where I got it from) for motion tracking within the player
  4. Expand the .zip ( * See below in known issues if you have problems here)
opy to the following location (or wherever you installed VR Player):
    C:\Program Files (x86)\VR Player\Trackers
  5. Open up VR player and set the tracker that you just copied as follows:
download the DK2 Tracker for vrplayer

Depending on the content you wish to view you have a few options. Here are some examples:

  1. Set up Oculus as extended Desktop in the Rift Display Mode program.
  2. Ensure your windows monitor is setup so your rift is secondary.
  3. For 3D movies such as Avatar:
Menu - Media - Format - Side By Side
    Menu - Media - Projection - Plane
  4. If your movie is not 3D
    Menu - Media - Format - Mono
    Menu - Media - Projection - Plane
  5. To open a movie select:
Menu - File - Open File - With VLC...
  6. Browse to your selected movie.
  7. Now that the movie is running you need to move the video screen onto your Oculus screen.
In my case the Oculus is my second monitor to the left. So I hit these keys:
Hit Windows Key + Cursor Key Left (Do this twice, this moves the window to your Oculus)
Hit Windows Key + Cursor Key Up (This maximizes the window)
  8. Put on headphones and enjoy!
How awesome is this? I would compare this to sitting about 1/3 of the way back from an IMAX screen.
Yeah, it is that good!
However as with all things DK2 there are pixels. I just cannot wait for the Oculus CV1 (Consumer Version 1)

If you have problems playing back files such as .MKV. You may also need to install a CODEC pack. I would recommend the CCCP Codec pack (It may have a Russian name but this should cover your CODEC needs and has no spam)

Known problems
Some users experience problems expanding the zip. I use winrar without issue. However you may need to unblock the zip file by right-click -> properties -> unblock button (bottom right)
Others have used 7zip without issue too.

This worked well, thanks. Do you know if they have any PLEX support of Oculus yet? Or if they will support it? Netflix too, would like that!

Glad to help VRGeek!
PLEX, not aware of anything new there. I'm part of their PLEX pass program and nothing on there yet.
Regarding Netflix, they had a demo of something they called Oculix at their developer conference.
Here is a YouTube video of it, it is pretty neat!

thanks, that video looks cool. Oculix, love it!

Whenever I copied the tracker to the trackers folder, I loaded up VRPlayer and the tracker wasn't there.

Not sure what that could be, I assume you saw other trackers in the same folder? ie, was the right folder?

I have the same problem as justous. I have put the dk2 tracker in the tracker folder with all the other trackers in it. VR player only had the trakers it had before, it still did not have dk2 option. Does anyone have a idea to fix that?

I assume you have the latest version of VRPlayer and Oculus SDK 0.4.4?

Same here. Latest VR Player with the latest Oculus drivers. Copied the tracker files into the right directory, but VRPlayer doesn't see it even if run as admin.

OK folks. Looks like there is a problem with the newer versions (The version I previously installed was OK)
Going to some digging...

I have confirmed this works OK on the latest version 0.5.1
What version of Windows are you running? Mine is on Win 8.1.
You may also try a prior version. You can download the previous versions here:

Same problem here. The DK2 tracker doesn't show up in the Tracker menu, no matter what I try. I did copy one of the other tracker directories and it shows up twice in the menu. I deleted one of the other directories and it gets re-installed when starting VRPlayer. I guess something stored in the registry.

Oculus Runtime 0.4.4
Windows 7 Professional SP1

Me again. Solved. It is related to the unblock issue (see known Problem). Just unblock the zip file before extracting. Then copy it to the Tracker Folder. And it works fine!

Good to hear you're working!

Vrplayer keeps crashing.. i have all the latest software and stuff. anything am i doing wrong?
I have win 8.1, DK2

You have the latest VR Player, latest video drivers and latest Oculus SDK?

You could try a different version of the VRPlayer, you can download previous versions here:

I don't know if this is still monitored. Anyways, here is my problem: I am using VR player with the DK2 tracker and all but i can not see any image from the oculus rift, if i move the OR the image will move according on my monitor screen. what am i doing wrong. BTW mys options are :
Media Menu Option
Format: Mono
Projection: Sphere
Effects: None

Device Menu Option
Layout: Side By Side
Distortion: Barrel
Tracker: Oculus Rift DK2

Hi Nick,

Are you running this in Oculus extended mode? (Step 1 above)
Once you do that then you need to move it to the Oculus "window" step 7 above. Once you do that you shouldn't see it on your main monitor anymore.

Wow! Merely remarkable! Thanks a lot for the details discussed! I know you have actually placed a great deal of initiative right into this as well as I would like to tell you exactly how thankful I am! There need to be much more blogs like this on the web!
