Products come and go preferences change like the wind. For most of the last year, many people favored the HTC Vive since it provided room scale and hand controllers. Now with Touch controllers, Oculus has caught up with room scale in Beta.
What about developers? Which headset do they prefer coding for? Per the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2017 survey, for each VR related survey, including games in development, the future platform of choice, general interest, and platform exclusives the Vive leads the Rift.
VR Headsets by the numbers
For games currently in development:
- 24 percent are now making games on HTC and Valve’s Vive headset
- 23 percent are supporting Oculus Rift
- 13 percent are supporting Sony’s PlayStation VR
Admittedly, the lead is small, just 1% difference, but someone has to win, right?
What about games that developers will work on after their current project? When developers were asked which platform they would use for their next game:
- 40 percent said the Vive
- 37 percent the Oculus Rift
- 26 percent the PlayStation VR
Now, after developers have tried the platforms. Their choice is clear, and the Vive wins with PSVR quickly rising up the list from 13% to 26%.
