I recently moved my VR devices into another room. The Oculus Rift was the first device to be setup, and I added a third Oculus sensor. All in the hope of providing me more space and room scale VR. What resulted was an exercise in early adopter troubleshooting.

The new room was all set up with two sensors in the front and a third in the corner as per the setup below.

Rift Tracking Problems

I eagerly went through the calibration steps to complete sensor tracking and guardian set up. However, this is when the problems began.

  • As I turned away from the front sensors, the image would jump to the side.
  • After about 5 minutes, I found my position would jump outside of the guardian system

Both of these problems with the image jumping and loss of tracking occurred when I faced away from the front Rift sensors (Marked Sensor one and two above)

USB Power Management

First I turned to good old Google to see what I could find. Some people had suggested turning off the power management in device manager for the Oculus sensors. I did this by hitting the windows key, then typing "Device Manager", and then selecting the device manager app (Control panel) and looking for the Oculus VR Devices.

Right click each one and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

Alas, this solution did not solve the problem.

During my Google travels. One of the other theories were problems with USB hubs. Particularly some ASUS boards. The board in my system is an ASUS X99 Deluxe and was apparently not found to have an issue. Nevertheless, I decided to try one of the Oculus approved boards to see is this would fix the problem. I headed over to Amazon and picked the Inateck Superspeed 4 Ports PCI-E to USB 3.0 Expansion Card for $23.99.

After installing the card. No luck, same issue as before. At this point, I started to pull my hair out.

The "aha moment" and solution!

As I swivel in my chair thinking, "there must be something I am missing here?" I then had one of those aha moments. The sensors work on Infra Red which is just another form of light wave and is reflected just like any other light would be. At the back of the new room are some mirror closets. When I am facing away from the Rift, I am facing the mirrors. I wonder if the mirrors are reflecting the light and causing the issue? Hmmm.

I closed one of the mirrors and quickly covered the other in an old sheet. I recalibrated the sensors and guardian system and hey presto, that was it!

Now, of course, I do not want a horrible sheet hanging there. Perhaps those mirror closets were not a good idea after all...
