Sony PlayStation VR will Cost $399 Available in October

Full article

It is official folks!

Sony has announced the pricing of their much awaited PlayStation VR which will cost $399 and will be available in October, just in time for a gift under the Christmas tree.

If you already own a PlayStation 4 this is pretty cheap when you compare with the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive which cost upwards of $600 for the headset, then at least another $1,000 for a beefy PC.

There is a BUT however. The $399 does NOT include the move controllers or the PlayStation camera which are both required in order to play PlayStation VR.

Sony claims most people already own the camera (Sony, I don't)

So here is the cost rundown for your parts list:

  • $349 PS4
  • $399 PlayStation VR
  • $45 PlayStation Camera
  • $29 x 2 = $58 for two PlayStation Move Controllers
(Prices are from Amazon)

Sony did say there would be a bundle price but did not disclose pricing. Therefore if you already own a PS4 your worst case scenario for PlayStation VR would be about $500 depending on bundling.

So your "all in" cost of the PlayStation VR will be less than $850.

For those readers in Europe, PlayStation VR will cost €399 and for those in the UK, £349

What about the Games and Technology?

Sony also confirmed the specs are the same as those already disclosed for the PlayStation VR. 5.7-inch OLED screen, refreshing at 120 frames per second with a resolution of 1920 x 1080.

There are 50 games promised between the October launch and the end of the year. Sony didn't provide a list but did say there would be a VR version of Star Wars: Battlefront that will be exclusive to the PlayStation VR. Eve Valkyrie already shipping with Oculus pre-orders will be available at the launch of PlayStation VR. You can review the list of PlayStation VR games we have compiled in the link below:
